A Brief History Of Amazing Letdowns

Vinyl: $9.99 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. Lilys' classic 1994 10", A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns, has more songs and expanded audio fidelity, creating a longer, more exciting full-frequency listening experience than previously available. A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns is, in places, haunting with an atmospherically delicate sense of melody and musical production for those that love slightly wistful, slightly melancholic songs. A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns is completely unlike any other Lilys album: instantly catchy and concise. These recordings, made in Philadelphia between 1993-4, present what Kurt Heasley, Lilys' frontman, founder, and sole constant member, terms as "a maximum listen, that properly represents the transitional phase" between the 1992 Slumberland Lilys debut In the Presence of Nothing and 1995's Eccsame the Photon Band (both reissued by Frontier Records in 2015). The opening guitar riff and drums of "Ginger" became widely recognized in the mid-nineties through use in the notorious CK1 Commercial, as part of Calvin Klein's Unisex fragrance ad campaign, once playing constantly on late night TV in the USA. "Ginger" has even been touted as the first Indie rock song ever used in corporate advertising. "Any Place I've Lived" is heard during the closing credits of the 2006 film, Keeping Up With the Steins.

Roots is Curtis Mayfield's visionary album, a landmark creation every bit as compelling and far-reaching in it's musical and extra-musical goals as Marvin Gaye's contemporary What's Goin' On. Opening on the hit "Get Down," the album soars on some of the sweetest and most eloquent - yet driving - soul sounds heard up to that time. - Curtis Mayfield was an American soul, rhythm and blues and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American Music. He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums.

The Milk Carton Kids are releasing the live album Live From Lincoln Theatre, for the first time on vinyl. Comprised of singers and acoustic guitar players Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale, The Milk Carton Kids both filmed and recorded their set at this Columbus, Ohio theatre in October 2013 during their tour in support of the Grammy-nominated album The Ash & Clay. Released as a film in 2014, the newly remastered audio will be available on vinyl.

“Live From Lincoln Theatre is the truest representation of what Joey and I have been up to for the last decade,” Pattengale explains. “The set list is like a greatest hits album of Milk Carton Kids songs. I’ve never played guitar in the studio quite the way that it comes together on stage. Our voices also communicate something extra for the occasion. And, of course, Joey doesn’t ramble about our master recordings, but there’s no stopping him once the lights are dim and the mics are hot.”

Founded in 2011, The Milk Carton Kids swiftly emerged as a major force in the American folk tradition, blending ethereal harmonies and intricate musicianship with a uniquely powerful brand of contemporary songcraft.

These fourteen pieces comprise unreleased recordings for installations, theater, and radio broadcasts, and they each beam with unusual melody, radiant color, and generative life. The world may seem like a pretty strange place right now, but if nothing else that’s forced us into realizing that being human is a shared experience. That sentiment lies at the core of Earth Is A Black Hole, the second full-length from the Los Angeles rock act Teenage Wrist.

The album also marks the group’s first release as a duo, with guitarist Marshall Gallagher stepping up as frontman, and longtime drummer Anthony Salazar backing him up in spectacular fashion. Gallagher explains. “I wanted to keep this band going and we didn’t know exactly what that would look like, so I wrote two songs and demoed them myself to see if everyone was still on board.” Those songs turned out to be the jangly power ballad “Yellowbelly” and spacey rocker “Wear U Down”—and with that, a new era of Teenage Wrist was born.

The artistic liberation of this lineup change, coupled with the past two years the band spent touring alongside genre-smashing acts such as Thrice, allowed Teenage Wrist to expand on the shoegazing sound that helped establish them as one of the most exciting rock bands around today. From lush, guitar-driven songs like “High Again” to the atmospheric ambience of “Stella” and syncopated aggression of “Earth Is A Black Hole,“—most evidently on the swirling anthem “Silverspoon,“— Earth Is A Black Hole sees the band shifting their songwriting focus to a more modern sound that showcases the limitless potential of the band.

Super Deluxe Edition Of The Band's 1972 Classic Includes Newly Remastered Original Album Plus 20 Previously Unreleased Studio And Live Recordings.

Bolstered by a fresh remastering,Vol 4's ambitious arrangements and complex grooves have never sounded more inspired and menacing. Originally released in September 1972, the album marked two major changes for the members of Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. While their previous albums - Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality - were produced by Rodger Bain and recorded in England, they instead chose to produce Vol 4 themselves and record it at the Record Plant in Los Angeles.

The generous addition of bonus material on VOL 4: SUPER DELUXE EDITION begins with six previously unreleased studio outtakes from the original sessions for the album. Each one has been newly mixed by Steven Wilson using the analog multi-tracks. Highlights include outtakes for "Supernaut" and "Changes," as well an instrumental version of "Under The Sun."

The set also features 11 additional studio recordings (also newly mixed by Wilson from the analog multi-tracks) that spotlight alternative takes, false starts and snippets of studio dialogue. These tracks transport listeners into the studio with the band and offer some insight into the making of the album. Along with several alternative takes for "Wheels Of Confusion," these recordings also include outtakes for "The Straightener" and "Snowblind."

The collection concludes with a searing collection of live performances that re-create a typical setlist from Black Sabbath's tour forVol 4. Recorded in March 1973 at various stops along the band's U.K. tour. The recordings were originally slated for a live album that was ultimately shelved. Although some of these performances have been previously available in various states, the release marks the first time that a full 1973 live Sabbath show has been recreated. The live audio has been newly mixed by Richard Digby Smith using the original 16-track analog tapes to achieve a level of fidelity not heard on any previous incarnations. Included here are thrilling live versions ofVol 4tracks ("Tomorrow's Dream" and "Cornucopia") and fan favorites ("Paranoid" and "War Pigs.")

What are we to make of the world? In many ways, the title New Fragility perfectly sums up our collective state of unease and anxiety, but it's particularly apt for singer songwriter Alec Ounsworth AKA Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and the trauma he's spent the best part of three years processing. "It's pretty personal, " says Ounsworth. "It's about what I think we're all experiencing at the moment, certainly here in the United States anyway - trying to move forward amidst an almost cruel uncertainty." Taken from the David Foster Wallace short story 'Forever Overheard', from the collection Brief Interviews With Hideous Men - "You have grown into a new fragility, " says the story's adolescent narrator - the title track documents what happens directly after a long relationship comes to an end, and what's discovered soon after. "There comes a period of making up for lost time in a changed world, " says Ounsworth, "and now is a time of predictable stupidity." "I never want to take another chance on anyone", Ounsworth laments over a steady chug of muted guitar chords, delicate piano, and bustling drums. "I can't believe the things I do to myself". It's a song that takes a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and doles out some uncomfortable truths. Yet it also showcases what Ounsworth has become so masterful at - couching a certain level of seriousness in something fun. Something danceable. It's what's powered some of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's most memorable moments, and what makes New Fragility such an accomplished, affecting record. Powerful too, taking aim at what Ounsworth calls "the failed democratic experiment that is the United States of America" and the supine hypocrisy of those currently in government. The first singles taken from New Fragility, the double A-side of 'Hesitating Nation' and 'Thousand Oaks', are deeply political, charting the decline of a nation. On the former, over quietly picked guitar and static chords, Ounsworth decrys state-sponsored pollution and the ubiquity of advertising, bemoaning our always on, always hustling culture. But it's 'Thousand Oaks', written in response to the fatal mass shooting at the Borderline Bar And Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 7, 2018, where Ounworth's anger reaches fever pitch. "I was watching an interview with Susan Orfanos, who lost her son, " says Ounsworth. "It was difficult to watch, and left me heartbroken for her and infuriated that so little has been done about gun control in the United States. The tragedy of this case is also that this particular shooting seemed almost 'forgettable', insofar as so many people have become inured and apathetic to such events." The soaring chorus and the melodic chug of Ounsworth's guitar provide a stark contrast to lines that drip with fury and rage. New Fragility is not without moments of beauty though. 'Innocent Weight', the first time Ounsworth has employed a string quartet, is a fragile, plaintive ballad that frames the dissolution of a relationship in heart-breaking terms ("I don't know what I've done wrong"). Ditto the wondrously sad 'Mirror Song', which combines piano and toy piano to great effect, and deconstructs the pressure of touring, the perils of self-medication, and questioning one's motives for pursuing music as a career. "The guilt about having so much opportunity but feeling empty inside is not easy to reconcile, " explains Ounsworth. "I'm mostly over it now." Trace the arc of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's evolution and it shows an accomplished musician and composer sounding ever more confident, constantly refining and broadening his sound and indulging an ever wider set of influences. Few have been as consistently brilliant, eclectic, and intimate; fewer still have done so while being defiantly, 100% independent, refusing to sign deals that compromise artistic vision. New Fragility is a continuation of this, yet it also stands apart as one his strongest collection of songs yet. Personal yet universal, New Fragility confronts numerous modern ills. 'Where They Perform Miracles', a song concerning spirituality and alternative methods of healing, harks back to Ounsworth's time as an anthropology student doing fieldwork in Mexico, while 'Dee, Forgiven' is an intimate look at what harm anxiety, and the over-prescription of certain medication, has on the vitality of youth. The song contains one of Ounsworth's strongest vocals yet - a quivering beacon that shifts from a wail to a low grumble in the blink of an eye, a remarkable expressive instrument that sits perfectly amid the understanded orchestration. For 15 years, it's been one of music's most distinctive voices, and it's never sounded as rich or poised. Together with his keen ear for melody and his unique, eclectic approach to composition - witness the gentle acoustic picking of 'Where They Perform Miracles', the spacious strings and woozy synths of 'CYHSY, 2005', or the rambling, slowed down bar-room blues of album closer 'If I Were More Like Jesus' - New Fragility is the sound of an artist completely at ease in his work, and unafraid to confront the difficult questions that haunt us all. "And I'm climbing this ladder / My head in the clouds", he sings on the latter. "I hope that it matters." As a metaphor for his career to date (and also an inside joke - borrowing this lyric directly from Neil Young's "Borrowed Tune"), it is pretty perfect - the dreamer, forever chasing his muse and musical inspiration. New Fragility is simply the latest chapter, and another classic entry in the canon of one of independent music's brightest, and most durable, artists.New Fragility will be released on CYHSY/Secretly Distribution. The album was produced by Alec Ounsworth, with additional production from Will Johnson, recorded by Britton Beisenherz in Austin, TX and mixed by John Agnello in New Jersey, mastered by Greg Calbi.

From beginning to end, the sparkling pop tunes off Claud Mintz's magnetic first album, Super Monster, capture the assorted stages of a relationship's delight and dejection-the giddy sensation of a first kiss during the beaming "Overnight," the heartsick longing of a pending rejection during the yearning "Jordan," the reluctant call for a requisite breakup during the smoldering "Ana.""I'd write about how I felt in the moment, then two months later, a year later. My perspective evolved on one relationship with the same person," Claud says. "I changed so much that it feels like a different person writing some of these songs-but it's just me."The debut release on Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory Records, Super Monster is a vertiginous but joyous coming-of-age reckoning with such young love. Claud sees relationships as games of endless wonder, intrigue, and second-guesses, a roller-coaster thrilling you even when it's terrifying. If "Gold" turns the tension and indecision of a bad match into an undeniable bit of lithe disco, "That's Mr. Bitch To You" uses a spurt of righteous indignation to fuse a little soul and emo into one breathless hook. Super Monster is like a compulsive compilation that Claud culled from a lifetime of musical enthusiasms-the arcing alt-rock of '90s airwaves, the rapturous pop of '00s chart-toppers, the diligent genre-hopping of modern online life. Claud emerges as the chameleonic mastermind of this mélange, channeling all of love's emotions into songs so sharp they make even the hardest times feel fun. Perhaps you are in the throes of one of these romantic moments yourself right now, resentful of a frustrating paramour like Claud during "Pepsi" or indulging in lust like "In or In Between." Or maybe these songs recall those wild days and tough situations. Incisive, instant, and addictive Super Monster works on either level-to remind us of love's wild ups and downs or to help us deal with them in real time.
