New Orleans’ EYEHATEGOD is the snarling, bilious sound of dead-end America. Since 1988, they’ve been a soundtrack for the troubled masses. Ugly music for ugly times. That’s the sense of disenchantment and disease that lies the heart of their latest and sixth full-length album, “A History of Nomadic Behavior”. Anyone familiar with EHG’s story knows this is survivor’s music, a sound unto itself where Sabbathian riffs are meted out with a caustic anger that goes beyond punk. That’s been the blueprint since guitarist Jimmy Bower (also of NOLA supergroup, Down) founded the band in 1988 with vocalist Mike IX Williams joining not long after. With a discography including sludge-punk mainstays like “In the Name of Suffering” (1990), “Take as Needed for Pain” (1993) “Dopesick” (1996) or 2014’s eponymously-titled LP, released in the US through Housecore Records, EHG laid the cracked foundation for their infamous and influential sound. “A History of Nomadic Behavior” finds the band, now slimmed to a four-piece rounded out by bassist Gary Mader and drummer Aaron Hill, leaner and meaner than ever; road-hardened by recent tours with Black Label Society, Corrosion of Conformity and Napalm Death in the US and abroad. From the bitter pill of opener “Built Beneath the Lies” to the hypnotic haze of closer “Every Thing, Every Day” it’s clear that that EYEHATEGOD hasn’t slowed or mellowed with time. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This is disorienting, uneasy listening. Music that still very much hurts.

Additionally, the package includes a C90 cassette tape compiling 26 never-before-issued outtakes, rarities and studio demos from Entertainment! and Solid Gold . The band pioneered a style of music that inverted punk’s blunt and explosive energies — favoring tense rhythms, percussive guitars, and lyrics that traded in Marxist theory and situationism. Even now, 45 years after the birth of the band, Gang of Four’s music has endured as a formative influence, not only to subsequent generations of musicians, but also activists, writers, and visual artists.

“As a kid, I stumbled upon a copy of Gang of Four’s Entertainment! accidentally and it went on to become one of the most influential records of my life as a producer, lyricist and fan of music in general. Their sparse, unorthodox, riff heavy guitars and nasty, funky, in-the-pocket rhythm section drew me in, but it was their questioning of the world that kept me listening as I grew. I consider them a seminal band, whose influence and effect permeates the music world in a deeper way than many realize. Thank you, Gang of Four, for existing.” - EL-P (Run The Jewels)

Dick's Picks Volume 36

In the Grateful Dead ?rmament, there are countless good shows, shining like stars in the sky. Then there are the great shows, those that shine the brightest. And then there are the truly transcendent shows, those that exert a gravitational pull-dare we say it, like a "Dark Star"-on all the other concerts from that particular year or tour. These are the nights that every Dead Head learns about right after getting on board the bus. and the September 21, 1972 performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia is truly one of those nights. This is the concert that original Dead archivist Dick Latvala strongly considered to kick off the Dick's Picks series, and it's the one that ended it. It's one of those nights when every Garcia guitar solo tells a story, when the rhythm section is locked in like the gears on a Swiss watch, and when the band is repeatedly hitting its vocal harmonies dead-on. It's also a night when Bob Weir absolutely shreds, his unusual chord voicings and off-time guitar ?lls perfectly complementing Jerry's leads (the set also includes some highlights from the 9/3/72 show at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO). So when we at Real Gone Music were considering which Pick to put on vinyl next, the choice was pretty obvious. But to do this concert justice, we had to bring in the best. This 7-LP set is mastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering from Bear's original tapes, which are absolutely brilliant in their clarity and immediacy. Lacquers are cut by Jeff Powell, who got his start at Memphis' legendary Ardent Studios and has worked with everybody from Bob Dylan to Gregg Allman to Irma Thomas. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Furnace Record Pressing, the vacuum-quiet test pressings were approved by engineer Norman, archivist David Lemieux, and Real Gone's own Gordon Anderson. And each of the seven LPs is housed inside a polyvinyl sleeve carefully nestled (with extra padding!) inside a two-piece hardshell box. We've also included a 4-page insert featuring, along with original photos and graphics and Bear's original notes, a word from Bear's son Star?nder Stanley on behalf of the Owsley Stanley Foundation, who kindly provided the tapes for our reissue. Limited to 2000 hand-numbered copies, this one's going to be a keepsake. Don't miss it.

Formed in Essen, Germany in 1984, Kreator are arguably the most influential and successful European thrash metal band ever, like many of their European speed metal brethren, Kreator fused Metallica's thrash innovations with Venom's proto-black metal imagery. Often credited with helping pioneer death metal and black metal by containing several elements of what was to become those genres. The band has achieved worldwide sales of over two million units for combined sales of all their albums, making them one of the best-selling German thrash metal bands of all time. The band's style has changed several times over the years, from a Venom-inspired speed metal sound, later moving in to thrash metal, and including a period of transitioning from thrash to industrial metal and gothic metal throughout the 1990s. In the early 2000s, Kreator returned to their classic thrash sound, which has continued to the present. Their last studio album 'Gods Of Violence' charted top twenty in ten countries, including a number one slot in their home country of Germany. This double LP, splatter vinyl anthology contains all of Kreator's Noise Records era classics and also includes rare tracks and remixes, some never available on vinyl before. The artwork contains rare and previously unseen photos.

The 13-track project features collaborations with Ashanti on the single "Fall Slowly" and Rick Ross on the track "Legend," along with the viral hit single "Snitch." Regarding the album, HotNewHipHop noted it "displays his lyrical prowess" and is "full of bangers and tracks with enough lyrical content to last you a while. Among these tracks is 'The Problem,' which acts as a standout cut." Lucas shares that, "Evolution is the art of growing and changing. Most people never evolve. This is me using music as my therapy to speak on things that kept me in a dark place. It allowed me to open up about who Joyner Lucas is and why. Being able to open up about things I used harbor inside has allowed me to grow as a person and evolve. Hopefully it inspires others to do the same."

Vinyl LP pressing. Madness was one of the leading bands of the UK ska revival of the late '70s and early '80s. As their career progressed, Madness branched away from their trademark "nutty sound" and incorporated large elements of Motown, soul, and British pop; their songwriting becoming ever-more nuanced and sophisticated. Although the band enjoyed one crossover American hit with 'Our House' in 1983, they remained a British phenomenon, but their influence on several successive generations of international musicians looms large. Madness remain one of the UK's most beloved groups; a national treasure with a plethora of smash hit singles under their belt. This album brings you twelve of their very best songs including 'Night Boat To Cairo', 'Our House' and 'It Must Be Love', plus their most recent single, 'Bullingdon Boys'.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S., Chastity Belt's Annie Truscott descended into a state of mourning. Her plan had been to join her partner, Jay Som's Melina Duterte, as violinist on tour, a privilege rarely afforded since both maintain busy road schedules, and for Truscott, the prospect of spending most of the year in a van wasn't met with exhaustion so much as exhilaration. At long last, she'd be making a living playing music, no side hustle needed. The cancellation of the tour represented a sidelined dream.Routine was born of this disappointment. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, Truscott and Duterte's collaborative project offers a glimpse of the creative possibilities that can emerge from a state of defeat. Written and recorded over the course of a month in Joshua Tree, Routine's lush debut EP And Other Things finds the couple trying on new roles. Truscott, who plays bass in Chastity Belt, wrote the bulk of the material and sings on the EP, while Duterte, normally a band leader, used the project as an opportunity to, in her words, "Take the backseat," as accompanist, producer, and engineer.Duterte describes the making of the EP as "seamless." In the mornings, Truscott sat outside of the cabin in the not-yet-blazing sun and worked out chord progressions on guitar while Duterte slept in. Staring out at the horizon, Truscott could see a smattering of houses and the sharp outline of a mountain range, but overall the property felt remote, far removed from home in Los Angeles. On long walks Truscott admired the recently bloomed spring flowers and pondered the legacy of friendships and experiences that made her. "I spend a lot of my time thinking about the people who've impacted my life," she says. "Routine gave me an opportunity to explore those relationships through music."It was on one of these walks that Truscott began writing "Cady Road," a contemplative, country-tinged pop song that urges listeners to sit in the discomfort of the present moment. "Relax/ It's fine/ You don't have to know this time," Truscott sings on the chorus, reflecting on the unsuredness that gripped her in those early days of the pandemic. Duterte joins in harmony, giving a song about being alone with your thoughts a collaborative dimension. "In Annie's songs I hear a yearning for something just out of reach, something unachievable," Duterte says. "She's such a great singer, so it felt good to just layer instruments to make her vision for it feel fully fleshed out." That impulse is heard vividly on "Cady Road,"where an abundant arrangement accompanies Truscott, replete with the spry notes of a banjolele.A true collaboration requires trust, intimacy, and patience, three elements that cohered almost mystically in the process of making this EP. "Melina is the most calming presence. She's so good at sitting with silences in a conversation and just observing," Truscott says. The quality not only makes Duterte a good partner, but also a good bandmate and producer. "Calm and Collected" is a tribute to that enviable ability to maintain serenity amidst the chaos of experience. Though it was written in Joshua Tree, Duterte and Truscott recorded it in the attic of their home in LA, where Duterte set up a studio in the free time afforded by the pandemic. The song is the quietest of the collection, a gentle ode underscored by atmospheric swaths of synth that swaddle the listener."I think of And Other Things as a series of vignettes," Truscott says. "We aren't telling one story here, we're telling a series of short stories that people can hopefully relate to." Asked how it feels to offer the EP up to the world during a time of major uncertainty in the music industry, Truscott offers only one word: "Cathartic."

When Linda Smith purchased a 4 track cassette recorder in the mid-1980s, it was not with the intention of launching a solo career. At the time, she was playing guitar in a band called the Woods, and thought it would be useful for sharing demos with her bandmates. In the end, the 4 track outlasted the Woods, but Smith had already started toying around with her own songs. The new hobby followed her from New York back to her native Baltimore, and over the next decade she'd release several albums worth of delicate, bewitching solo music on cassette. Till Another Time: 1988-1996 is the first retrospective collection of Smith's charmingly lo-fi music, situating her as a pioneer of the home recording boom that persists today. Sparse and gentle, Linda's music is tinged with lovelorn melancholy despite the sweetness of her voice. Over '60s pop-indebted melodies on tracks like "A Crumb Of Your Affection", she delivers observations like "I'd been so hungry for so long, I'd forgotten how to eat" with an earnest softness. Elsewhere, her voice takes on a post punk deadpan, as on "I See Your Face" when she glumly repeats "someone speaks and I hear your name." The effect of both modes is a haunting charm, equally reminiscent of early Cherry Red Records and '60s yé-yé. This sense of timelessness was bolstered by Smith's no-nonsense approach to recording. She recorded almost all of her songs at home, using 4 and later 8 track tape recorders. There was a creative freedom that came with recording on tape - it eliminated the need for a band or studio to bring her ideas to life. Unbeknownst to Smith, this was a conclusion that many musicians were reaching at the time - the seeds of the home recording movement were being sowed across the country, and she was at the forefront. Unfortunately, the independence that made at-home recording appealing to artists like Smith also made it difficult for them to reach a wider audience. Most of their communities were insular, relying on niche publications, cassette trading, and word of mouth to share music. Smith herself released a few 7"s on labels like Slumberland and Harriet, but remained relatively local in terms of reach. Nevertheless, one can trace a direct line from Smith, recording her first album in her Brooklyn apartment all those years ago, to the ubiquity of bedroom recording today. Till Another Time is an effort to do just that, shedding light on her fascinating catalog while acknowledging it's role in shaping today's musical landscape.

All The Right Noises is an intense confection of illicit charms recorded in the months leading up to the first Covid-19 lockdown, originally due for release in September 2020. Strange to reflect then on how much of the new material appears to address the challenging new world we now inhabit. On the album, Luke says " All the songs were written and recorded pre-Covid. But it is interesting how if you look at some of the tracks through the prism of Covid they still make a lot of sense."

Bunny Lee recorded a massive volume of remarkably consistent music in the 70s. This compilation brings together rare and unreleased cuts that puts the listener at the center of a typical recording session, complete with false starts and studio banter. Linval Thompson is represented by two unreleased tunes, and is also heard in the runup to 'Tommy's Vibration'. 'Ethiopian Rock', a total scorcher, is the only recorded tune by the deejay Jah Smile before Bunny persuaded him to turn to singing and changed his name to Barry Brown. In a healthy spirit of competition, Bunny would often try out different singers on tunes that he thought would hit, hence Ronnie Davis's soulful take on Johnny Clarke's 'Every Knee Shall Bow', Johnny's version of Horace Andy's 'Better Collie', and Johnny and Horace sharing vocals on 'No Man Is An Island', all unreleased until now. 'No Babylon Shall Escape In This Time' has Johnny Clarke and 'Bongo' Herman Davis recorded over the original version side of Johnny's 'None Shall Escape The Judgement'. 'Life Of My Own' is a beautifully constructed lament by a singer who neither Bunny nor various expert ears have managed to identify: at Bunny's suggestion he is credited as 'The Raver'. 'War Zone' and 'Keep On Running' are examples of Tubby's mixes that have had further effects dubbed on elsewhere; sound systems and foreign record labels occasionally did this to manufacture their own specials from existing mixes. 'Jamaican Fruit Of African Roots' has recently been the subject of the fascinating documentary 'Shella Record: A Reggae Mystery'; the Lennox Brown cut here has only just been discovered. Also included are two stinging dubplates by Cornell Campbell: the first is aimed straight to the head of Arrows sound system, while the second, recorded in the early 80s, sums up the vital partnership of two of Jamaica's musical giants.

Elsewhere, 'The Divided City' captivates and intrigues while 'Only Strings and Their Supports Remain' and 'There Is One of Which You Never Speak' are bold roars for survival before the choral ambience of 'Desires Are Already Memories' and piercing drones of 'Total Perspective Vortex' bring down the curtain on a spectacular and incredibly emotive body of work.

Initially written and recorded when Atmosphere and fledgling label Rhymesayers Entertainment were still making a name for themselves in the Minneapolis hip-hop scene, "God's Bathroom Floor" was an early standout for the group. Turning heads and drawing new fans in with Slug's introspective raps over producer Stress' hypnotic jazzy beat, the song was performed live frequently, becoming an audience favorite before ever appearing on an actual release. Even then, it was only a live performance they made available, and only on a limited mixtape they released in 1996. It would be another year before the 4-track studio recording would surface on Atmosphere's Overcast! EP, a collection of focus tracks promoting their debut full-length album, but "God's Bathroom Floor" never made it onto the album itself and slowly slipped into obscurity from there. Now, in celebration of it's 25th anniversary, the original recording has been unearthed, remastered, and pressed on this limited edition 7-inch vinyl. Plus, in a nod to the song's original release as a live version, we've included a new live performance of the song, recorded recently in Montreal, mixed and mastered exclusively for this special release. Whether you're a lifelong fan whose first introduction to the group was through this song, a new fan looking to explore the group's historical roots further, or somewhere in between, this release will be a welcome addition to your Atmosphere collection.

Having celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2020 [their first eight years spent as Crown Of Thorns], The Crown have proven themselves one of the most enduring forces in death metal. In 2021 they further up the ante with 'Royal Destroyer', a record that sets a new standard for the genre. "It is our album number ten, so now we are in the big boys club," says bassist Magnus Olsfelt. "I think it in some ways is our crowning achievement, and it encompasses our sound across all albums on one defining record. It's got it all - the early 90s death metal stuff, the haunting melodies, the thrash, the punk, the grind, the heavy metal and the more epic and doomy stuff."
