Ahead of the album release, The New York Times put out a piece that called Bleachers’ new music “anthemic life-affirming pop-rock”. Bleachers, who are known for their incredible live shows,  headlined a North American tour in support of the album, which included a number of major festival dates like Sasquatch Festival, Governor’s Ball, and Firefly Music Festival. Dee Snider

Leave A Scar

ON SALE $14.97 CD: $11.49 Buy

In 2018, legendary heavy metal vocalist and pop culture pillar DEE SNIDER turned the heavy music world on its axis with his transformative full-length, For The Love Of Metal. Produced by HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta, the album re-cemented the undeniable prowess of the iconic Twisted Sister singer with its modernized mastery and take-no-prisoners attitude. Three years later, with one of the most collectively tumultuous times society has ever experienced behind him, DEE SNIDER triumphantly returns with the potent full-length follow up Leave A Scar. Once again produced by Jamey Jasta, with co-production, mixing and mastering by drummer Nick Bellmore, Leave A Scar sees DEE SNIDER & Co. continuing in the invigorated direction of For The Love Of Metal, infusing a dose of classic heavy metal flavor that longtime fans will rush to embrace. Like a scar itself, Leave A Scar is an illuminating plentitude of angst etched in time – serving as a musical refuge and expressive output for Dee. But in turn, this auditory time capsule written to express the anger, unease and pain he experienced during lockdown emerges as not only blisteringly heavy, but relentlessly powerful. Heads will bang within seconds of the hard-charging opening notes of ultra-catchy album starter and lifer anthem “I Gotta Rock (Again)”, instantly setting the stage for the non-stop onslaught of metallic mainstays to come. Tracks like the brutal “Time To Choose” – featuring the primed guest vocal attack of Cannibal Corpse’s George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher – and mosh-ready “The Reckoning” showcase the album’s heavy assault, without sacrificing the harmonic goodness evident on tracks like the unrelenting, hooky thrasher “All Or Nothing More” and melodic, metal-core inspired “In For The Kill”. Energetic single of strength “Down But Never Out” encapsulates the chunky riffage and driving drums palpable throughout the album, while searing “Before I Go” provides one of the album’s most massive, memorable choruses and chilling lyrics. The album closes with victorious ballad “Stand”, a call for listeners to take a stand and make their voices heard. Each of the 12 tracks on Leave A Scar not only further bolster DEE SNIDER’s position as one of the most celebrated frontmen of all time, showcasing that his vocal delivery and commanding swagger is as strong as ever, but that he is nowhere near stopping. If For The Love Of Metal ignited DEE SNIDER’s eminent surge into a new era – Leave A Scar sets it ablaze.

Son Volt

Electro Melodier

ON SALE $12.97 CD: $9.99 Buy

2020 was not quite what Jay Farrar was expecting for the 25th anniversary of Son Volt, the band he started in 1995 after leaving the seminal group Uncle Tupelo, whose No Depression album helped define the alt-country and Americana genre. The group had just finished an Outlaw Country Cruise when the pandemic hit and sent them into their homes on lockdown.

Instead of a triumphant tour marking the illustrious landmark, Farrar was forced indoors by the pandemic, and his “Reverie” during that time helped define Electro Melodier, Son Volt’s 10th studio album – and third for influential Nashville indie Thirty Tigers. The title, taken from the names of two vintage amplifiers from the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, also describes the disc’s unique blend of folk, country, blues, soul and rock – an electric troubadour with melodies that hit and stick. Social protest songs like “Living in the U.S.A.” and “The Globe,” the former about the promises of this nation gone wrong, the latter referencing the street protests accompanying the Black Lives Matter movement, exist side by side with odes to long-term relationships (specifically his 25-year marriage) in “Diamonds and Cigarettes” and “Lucky Ones.”

Once again accompanied by the current Son Volt line up – keyboardist/steel guitarist Mark Spencer, bassist Andrew Duplantis, guitarist Chris Frame and drummer Mark Patterson – Farrar takes a slight turn from 2019’s politically pointed Union to a series of songs that asks questions rather than demanding answers – think of “Living in the U.S.A.” as Farrar’s version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” or Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power,” an anthem to unite the populace.

One listen to Electro Melodier, which opens with “Reverie,” describing Farrar’s contemplative state gazing out his window, enlivened with Mark Spencer’s “Wichita Lineman” guitar riffs and the lush Big Star melodies, and you wonder why no other rock ‘n’ roll bands or singer/songwriters are making albums like this about what we’re all going through.

With tour dates scheduled before the end of 2021, Son Volt is ready to return to what they know best after a welcome period of introspection.

The songs of Electro Melodier help remind us to be thankful of what we still have – new music from Jay Farrar and Son Volt.

Into The Mystery

ON SALE $14.97 CD: $12.99 Buy

2021 release. Just as their critically acclaimed 2020 album Out of Body impacted audiences, Needtobreathe capitalized on a rush of inspiration and rode the wave of creativity with the writing and recording of Into The Mystery. Without telling a soul, the band decamped to a historic house-turned-recording studio in Columbia, TN to begin working on new music. Over the course of three weeks, they resided under one roof, laughed during meals, explored their surroundings, and recorded together with co-producer and engineer Konrad Snyder and special guests, Carrie Underwood, Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Natalie Hemby (The Highwomen). Out of this de facto creative hub and "extended summer camp," they handcrafted an album reflective of the moment, yet independent of all expectations-even their own.

A RESIDENCY IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA” is the major label debut from multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer NAIA IZUMI. Overlaying virtuosic two-hand tapping, eloquent phrasing, and time-warping tremolo upon a slow-honey drip of soul, Naia speaks through his music as if the sound flows through him.

Diagnosed with autism at the age of 16, Naia dropped out of high school to join the Job Corps before deciding to pursue his dream full force, busking on the streets and performing hundreds of gigs across the country before settling in Los Angeles.  In 2018, Naia made his breakout win at NPR’s highly-coveted Tiny Desk Contest with his track “Soft Spoken,” which landed the musician a major label record deal with Sony Music Masterworks.

On “A Residency in the Los Angeles Area” Naia collaborated with producer Tony Berg [Peter Gabriel, Phoebe Bridgers] and recorded at Sound City Studios, performing vocals, guitar, bass, drums, Japanese Koto, mandolin, cittern, and more.  From the simmering funk beat of “Honesty” to the searing solo performance on “Natural Disaster,” the smoky wah of “Six Inch Stilettos,” and the lushly hypnotic melodies on “Good At Being Lonely,” the album showcases Naia’s artistry on every level.  A subtle homage to his adopted home base, “A Residency in the Los Angeles Area” represents the union of practice and magic, technique and spirit, intense thought and unrestrained emotion

Charlie Parr's newest album, Last of the Better Days Ahead, is a collection of powerful new songs about how one looks back on a life lived, as well as forward on what's still to come. It's spare production foregrounds Parr's poetic lyricism, his expressive, gritty voice ringing clear over deft acoustic guitar playing that references folk and blues motifs in Parr's own exploratory, idiosyncratic style. When it comes to what it all means, Parr says it best: "Last of the Better Days Ahead is a way for me to refer to the times I'm living in. I'm getting on in years, experiencing a shift in perspective that was once described by my mom as 'a time when we turn from gazing into the future to gazing back at the past, as if we're adrift in the current, slowly turning around.' Some songs came from meditations on the fact that the portion of our brain devoted to memory is also the portion responsible for imagination, and what that entails for the collected experiences that we refer to as our lives. Other songs are cultivated primarily from the imagination, but also contain memories of what may be a real landscape, or at least one inspired by vivid dreaming. The album represents one full rotation of the boat in which we are adrift-looking ahead for a last look at the better days to come, then being turned around to see the leading edge of the past as it fades into the foggy dreamscape of our real and imagined histories."

While many of us have struggled to salvage a sense of purpose from a year's worth of isolation, veteran New York rocker Willie Nile has tapped into his own lockdown experience as a source of inspiration for the set of haunting new songs that comprise his emotion-charged new release, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Although the veteran singer-songwriter borrowed it's title from the beloved 1951 science-fiction movie classic, the album was actually inspired by the sight of Nile's beloved hometown temporarily turned into a desolate ghost town. "It came from seeing the deserted streets of downtown Manhattan, with all the shops and stores boarded up and all these beautiful buildings looking down on everything," Nile recalls, "But one Friday night last June, crossing Varick Street, I realized that there wasn't a car in sight, and that I could have laid down in the middle of the street without anyone noticing. The title The Day the Earth Stood Still hit me, and I carried it around in my head for awhile, and eventually it sparked this set of songs." The title became the jumping-off point for one of the most powerful and personal albums of Nile's long and prolific career. Indeed, The Day the Earth Stood Still - his 14th studio effort - features 11 new original compositions that exemplify the artist's trademark mix of romance, idealism and humor, channeling a true believer's passionate affirmation of life, love and rock 'n' roll. Such new Nile originals as "Sanctuary," "Expect Change" and "Way of the Heart" underline Nile's abiding passions, while the more out-there "Off My Medication" and "Where There's a Willie There's a Way" (co-written by fellow musical veteran Michael Des Barres) display his self-effacing sense of humor. Nile's hard-wired social conscience drives the heartfelt "Blood on Your Hands," recorded as a duet with Nile's West Village neighbor Steve Earle, and the impassioned "The Justice Bell," inspired by Nile's encounter with civil rights icon and U.S. Congressman John Lewis.

In 1967 The Byrds rented a studio in Nashville and hired local musicians, including John Hartford and Clarence White, to record an album about American musical history, based on hillbilly, country and bluegrass. Directed by producer Pete Asher, the Byrds recorded the album "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo". John Hartford's influence as guitarist and banjo player on this production has been considered enormous. The album is seen as a milestone in rock history, it was the birth of the new genre country rock, nowadays also called Americana. But there was no room in John Hartford's life to submit himself artistically to a band structure. He preferred to record solo albums and toured with them worldwide. In the same year that saw the release of "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo", the American country star Glen Campbell covered the John Hartford composition "Gentle On My Mind". The song conquered the world in the Campbell version and earned Hartford two Grammys in that same year. John Hartford once said: "The success with "Gentle On My Mind" brought me my freedom".Which allowed him to fulfill a dream, working several years as helmsman on a paddle steamer on his beloved Mississippi. In February 1977, during one of his rare tours of Europe, John Hartford also had a gig in Bremen, which was recorded by Radio Bremen. A great recording, entertaining, exciting, multifarious. Many years later, in 2000, shortly before his death, John Hartford topped his extraordinary life's work once again with contributions to the soundtrack of the Mississippi odyssey "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" by the Coen Brothers, starring George Clooney. In 2001 he received another Grammy for this work. This is a further recognition of John's life's work, the preservation of traditional American music to ensure it does not disappear in the short-lived mainstream, losing it's significance. On June 4, 2001 John Hartford lost his fight against cancer in Nashville, Tennessee.Media

Bassist Henry Franklin's 1972 release for Black Jazz, The Skipper, is one of the highlights in a label catalog full of many, and his 1974 follow-up, The Skipper at Home ('The Skipper' is Franklin's nickname), lives up to it's predecessor's high standard and might even surpass it. Which is no surprise given that a lot of the same players are on it, including trumpeter/flugelhornist Oscar Brashear, tenor/soprano saxophonist Charles Owens, and pianist Bill Henderson (here billed as Kemang Sunduza). But The Skipper at Home also boasts ace talents like keyboardist Kirk Lightsey (memorably featured on the Roland Haynes Black Jazz release 2nd Wave), trombonist Al Hall, Jr. (who appeared on Black Jazz releases from Doug Carn, Chester Thompson, and Calvin Keys), and drummer Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler, who's played with everyone from Miles Davis to Joe Henderson. The result is an album that, like The Skipper, is rooted in bop but one that nods to some of the currents that were swirling in jazz at the time; it's a little freer, a little more electric. And, as is true of just about every Black Jazz release, the ensemble work is remarkably intuitive and swinging, driven by Franklin's melodic, inventive bass playing. The Skipper at Home has never been reissued on vinyl outside of Japan, and it's never sounded better thanks to Mike Milchner's remastering. Pat Thomas' liner notes complete the package. A beautiful record.
