Liz Cooper

Hot Sass

ON SALE $10.97 CD: $8.99 Buy

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Liz Cooper will release her anticipated new album, Hot Sass, September 3. Produced by Benny Yurco (Michael Nau, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals), mixed by Dan Molad (Lucius, Emily King) and recorded live at Little Jamaica Recordings in Burlington, VT, the new album marks multiple departures for Cooper—from her nine-year home of Nashville to Brooklyn, from her band addendum of the Stampede, and from the genre-based expectations she’s accumulated throughout her career.  After heavy touring in support of 2018’s Window Flowers, where her songs stretched out in live settings, she felt constricted by the Americana-adjacent associations that "the Stampede" carried. So with her bandmates’ blessing, she dropped the moniker, pursuing sounds and songs that let her chase the inspiration lent to her by the likes of Courtney Love, Lou Reed, and David Bowie. With these twelve new songs, Cooper comes into her own—both musically and as a person—embracing a newfound sense of independence, honesty, maturity and creativity.  In addition to Cooper and Yurco, Hot Sass also features Cooper’s longtime bandmates and collaborators Joe Bisirri (bass), Ryan Usher (drums, percussion) and Michael Libramento (guitar, synthesizer).

Reflecting on the album, Cooper shares, “It’s me learning about what kind of woman I am and it’s not pretty all the time…I’m still processing these songs. Still reflecting. And I think that’s the thing—Hot Sass is just a stamp in time of what was happening in my life. I just want to continue making art that displays myself, the moments, and the people around me.”

The new record follows Cooper’s 2018 full-length debut album, Window Flowers, which was released to widespread critical acclaim. Of the album, NPR Music praised, “a gorgeously arranged and performed bouquet of psychedelia-tinged folk-rock,” while Rolling Stone hailed,  “Cooper pushes her strand of folk rock deep into psychedelic territory by merging her idiosyncratic vocal style with swirling, droning guitar effects and lacerating solos that feel dusted with otherworldly magic,” and Paste declared, “If we’re lucky, we are going to hear a lot more artists in the future like Liz Cooper.” Originally from Baltimore and now based in Brooklyn, Cooper has continued to tour consistently since her debut, performing alongside artists such as Dr. Dog, Shakey Graves, Bermuda Triangle, Lord Huron and Phosphorescent as well as special festival performances at Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, BottleRock Music Festival, Lockn’ and more.

Cooper will also continue to tour throughout 2021 including upcoming performances at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Railbird Festival, Telluride Blues and Brews, Sea Hear Now Festival and Freakout Festival, with additional headline dates to be announced soon.

Themes from William Blake's 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell’ is the fourth studio album by Norwegian experimentalists Ulver. Having been known for their more folklore-tinged black metal compositions on early studio releases, in late 1997, mainman Kristoffer Rygg invited keyboardist, sound conceptualist, and composer Tore Ylwizaker into the collective, and together they devised a plan for The Blake Album, an altogether far more adventurous endeavour than prior releases.

What resulted was a seamless integration of electronic & industrial music, with elements of progressive metal & avantgarde rock, all fused with ambient passages, & following Blake's plates as track indexes. A work of deep and personal art, the album, while initially surprising to fans due to its complete shift in genre, has become a classic today, and a prime example of the boundary-pushing evolution beyond the confines of genre expectations through the latter part of the 90s. Upon release, ‘The Marriage of Heaven & Hell’ received widespread acclaim from critics within the rock, metal & alternative music press, being awarded Album of the Month in several high-profile magazines such as Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, and Rock Hard.

The album notably includes guest vocal appearances from Darkthrone’s Fenriz, as well as Ihsahn & Samoth, most known for their work in Emperor.

The French post black metal formation Vous Autres now return with 'Sel de Pierre', an album where a glimpse of light cracks into the gigantic wall of despair and melancholy they used to build. As sharp and beautiful as a blooming black thistle, 'Sel de Pierre' summons wide panoramas of nature: from the crumpled lands to the menacing seas, taking the listener from place to place without ever revealing when and where this unique sound came from. The journey through 'Sel de Pierre' is as intense as it's predecessors. Only now, hope is summoned into a place where is has no apparent meaning, yet it has a reason to be.

The undisputed masters of blackened deathcore have returned to ignite sonic memories of albums past with the scorch of old school sound. Set to be released Sep 3, 2021 via Nuclear Blast Records, Carnifex's "GRAVESIDE CONFESSIONS" is no stranger to the harsh world in which it was created. While all of humanity experiences the turmoil of pain, weakness, and betrayal, it is also deeply ingrained in our nature to keep these notions closely protected; to keep them secret. Often as we approach death, we feel an insatiable need to reveal these things to one another; to confess. "'GRAVESIDE CONFESSIONS' is all the things you want to say, but don't; the things you carry with you a little too long, sometimes right up to your deathbed. This record explores the spaces that we typically push to the side, in an honest and vulnerable way, " explains founder and vocalist Scott Ian Lewis. "There's a release, a sense of humor, and a catharsis to be found in going there, especially when you don't go there normally."Songs like the title track present a direct link to these notions, examining lyrical topics of raw reality, sonically bound by spite. 'ALIVE FOR THE LAST TIME' continues the album with a slight tinge of industrial, esoteric melody. With elements of their discography spread throughout, 'COUNTESS OF PERPETUAL TORMENT' carries on the weighted tone of SLOW DEATH, whereas the epic essence of 'CARRY US AWAY' proclaims huge melodies with soaring choruses and an almost numetal atmosphere.GRAVESIDE CONFESSIONS arose just in time to aid in celebrating the 15 year anniversary of the debut Carnifex album, DEAD IN MY ARMS. The band revisited their first album to re-record 3 songs, but now with huge advancements in production technology. A return to their roots, these songs act as the completion of a circle; a return to where things first began. "GRAVESIDE CONFESSIONS leaves an impression, " states Lewis, "not just from a superficial standpoint, but deeper. Listeners will recognize certain things when they compare what the record is, to what they know about the four of us. I hope they find some inspiration to push forward, themselves."

Live archive release. After fifteen years of touring with the beloved Hot Band, Emmylou Harris formed the Nash Ramblers, a new acoustic all-star group, in 1990, featuring Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Roy Huskey Jr. (bass), Larry Atamanuik (drums), Al Perkins (dobro, banjo, vocals), and Jon Randall Stewart (acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals). The band played on the road for several months before making their Nashville debut at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) on September 28, 1990. That concert was recorded and shelved, while another live run at the Ryman Auditorium the following spring was released as Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers At the Ryman to great acclaim, winning a Grammy and spurring public interest in saving the beloved music hall. Now, more than thirty years later, Rhino's James Austin has unearthed the 1990 TPAC recording and Nonesuch releases Ramble in Music City: The Lost Concert for the first time. The TPAC set features entirely different songs from the Ryman album and includes music by A.P. Carter, Rodney Crowell, Ruth Franks, the Louvin Brothers, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Paul Simon, and Townes Van Zandt, among others, as well as her own compositions.

gg bb xx

CD: $16.97 Buy

LANY's 4th album, gg bb xx, changes gears for Paul Klein, Jake Goss & Les Priest. It focuses on what Klein describes as micro-moments: flashes we experience that come n' go in the blink of an eye. Nowhere is that spontaneity more evident than in the album's title (you pronounce it `gg' as in Hadid, `bb' as in Rexha, and `xx' as in, well, The xx.) "I wanted a title that had no pretense, no preconceived notion," Paul explains. "Whatever the song feels like to you, that's what the title means."

Over the course of her lush, expansive, defiantly sprawling new album, "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert", released on Age 101, the Ivor Novelloaward-winning, Mercury nominated Little Simzdelivers an undeniable modern classic, effortlessly condensing any number of disparate styles and genres into music which thrillingly broaches the gap between urgent modern treatise and hip hop. A bold, quantum leap forward from the critically beloved "Grey Area", this is hardly music aiming simply for the pop charts; rather, it is turbo charged with the kind of fury and potency, confusion and anxiety that make up the modern experience of being Black, British and female at this particular point in time. This is no mere philosophical exercise, however - the result is her most ambitious and soaring body of work to date, one which operates at the very heights of what rap can be

Two classics of hair metal from the early '90s from former Dokken mainstay and Ozzy-approved guitarist George Lynch's MTV-acclaimed crew. Originally formed by lead guitarist George Lynch and drummer Mick Brown in 1989 after creative differences led to the break-up of their previous band, Dokken who'd left Germany to gain huge Stateside success at the birth of MTV, The Lynch Mob found themselves at the centre of the West Coast hair metal scene. The line-up for Lynch Mob's gold-selling debut 'Wicked Sensation' from 1990 was completed by bassist Anthony Esposito and singer Oni Logan. Co-produced by the band and Max Norman (Ozzy) it features the singles 'River Of Love' and 'No Bed Of Roses'; this edition now including the radio edit of the title track. The critically acclaimed follow-up fared less well due to the arrival of grunge and the band would split soon after. Produced by Keith Olsen (Fleetwood Mac, Whitesnake, Heart) it arrived in 1992 featuring Robert Mason on lead vocals and featuring the key tracks 'Tangled In The Web' and 'Dream Until Tomorrow', plus a solid cover of Queen's anthemic 'Tie Your Mother Down'. The band's huge popularity in Japan, saw the album extended to include 'Love Finds A Way' and 'Love In Your Eyes', both of which are included here. Lynch Mob would split shortly after their second album, but have regularly reformed for new recordings and tours, with their most recent release a 30th Anniversary "Reimagined" edition of their stunning debut.
