Bruce Cockburn's self-titled debut recording never been remastered for vinyl before 2020's 50th Anniversary box set. As soon as those limited-edition copies sold-out, fans began clamouring for this: Cockburn's debut album. For fans this is the perfect genesis of a globally acclaimed guitarist and songwriter. A blend of youthful enthusiasm and innocence that never quite resurfaced again in his work, especially as he developed his jazz-folk fusion and became known for both immense skill on the guitar and his activism in support of social causes. Fans know this album as Bruce Cockburn's happy-go-lucky years, before the weight of his success encouraged him to use his songwriting for a purpose, never again having this much whimsy in the studio. The opening number, "Going to the Country," evokes the era's hippie back-to-the-earth movement, and as all good things come back around again, is just as fresh in today's enviro-movements. His hit song "Musical Friends" remains a fan favorite to this day.

In the summer of 1970, Linda Hoover, then 19, entered Manhattan’s Advantage Sound Studio to cut her first album with Gary Katz, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen leading a team that also included guitarists (and future Steely Dan members) Denny Dias & Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, and Eric Weissberg, saxophonist Jerome Richardson, plus members of the Dick Cavett Orchestra.

I Mean To Shine includes three original compositions by Linda alongside The Band’s “In A Station” (from Music From Big Pink) and Stephen Stills’ “4+20” (which appeared on CSN&Y’s Déjà Vu). Almost half of the album was penned by the pre-Steely Dan songwriting duo of Becker and Fagen, including what would become the album’s title track. After creating a wonderful record, album cover photos were taken and then it all fell apart.

The release was shelved over a business disagreement and if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Hoover learned that Barbra Streisand also recorded “I Mean To Shine” (which would appear on her album Barbra Joan Streisand). Streisand’s album hit #11 and went gold. For the production team of Katz, Becker, and Fagen one success built on another and they were hired to staff positions at ABC-Dunhill Records in Los Angeles.

Hoover continued to pursue musical opportunities in New York, but with her creative team gone and no record release to show for their collective efforts, she wound up returning to her parents’ house in Florida. However, she did take a tape copy of her album home with her.

Now, with the blessing from Hoover and original producer Katz, the previously unissued album, I Mean To Shine finally sees the light of day and even features the proposed 1970 cover shot by Joel Brodsky (whose work at that time had already graced the covers of releases from The Doors, Van Morrison, The Stooges, and more). The album has been produced for release by Linda, Jay Willingham, and Grammy®-winner Cheryl Pawelski with audio restoration and mastering by Grammy®-winning engineer Michael Graves. Scott Schinder’s liner notes are informed by new interviews with Hoover and Katz.

Following last year’s Humble Pie Official Bootleg Collection Volume 1 double LP comes the Official Bootleg Collection Volume 2, curating rare and previously (officially) unreleased live shows that were illicitly recorded between 1971 and 1981.

Emerging from the remnants of The Small Faces, Humble Pie formed in 1969 when guitarist and vocalist Steve Marriott joined forces with Peter Frampton, drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist Greg Ridley, and began their ascent to conquering the theatres and then arenas of North America, culminating in 1972’s double live Performance: Rockin’ The Filmore album. Frampton left in 1971 for a highly successful solo career, replaced by Colosseum's Clem Clempson, and it was this line-up that was captured in New York in 1971, at one of Clem’s first shows with the Pie. The extemporisations of Performance: Rockin’ The Filmore became the basis for much of Humble Pie's live repertoire for the remainder of the 1970s, but this 1971 New York show does include their unique take on Eddie Cochran's 'C’mon Everybody' and 'I Wonder' from the soon to be released Smokin' LP.

Side Two finds the Pie backed up by the soulful vocals of The Blackberries--Venetta Fields, Clydie King & Billie Barnum==who appear on “Oh La-De-Da”, ‘” Don’t Need No Doctor” and “30 Days In The Hole.”

Humble Pie split in 1975 following their Street Rats LP, but not before Side Three’s Philadelphia show on March 15, 1975, featuring ‘Four Day Creep’ and ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’.
The Pie would eventually reform for 1980's “On To Victory” comeback record, this time with a line-up featuring Bobby Tench from the Jeff Beck Group on guitar and vocals and bassist Anthony “Sooty” Jones.

Side Four from Privates Club, N.Y.C. on March 25, 1981 features the epic 23 minute take of ‘30 Days in the Hole’ / ‘I Walk on Gilded Splinters’.

Housed in a gatefold sleeve, with plenty of rare memorabilia, the booklet features an essay based on new interviews with Pie drummer Jerry Shirley.

Revelation [Limited Edition Purple LP]

ON SALE $27.97 Vinyl: $20.97 Buy

MP3 Album: $7.99 Download

Like most concept albums of the period Man's 1969 debut release was a little short on continuity and well concept but who cares when in the space of one wildly psychedelic side Revelation careened from the psychedelic pomp of And in the Beginning to the banned-in-the-UK Erotica which upped the ante on Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg's carryings-on with the sounds of a four minute-long female orgasm set to a fuzz-guitar freak-out!? Side two is only a little bit less intense, with the coulda been/shoulda been single Don't Just Stand There (Come Out of the Rain) a worthy successor to the Small Faces Itchycoo Park. this Welsh band displays the twin guitar attack of Roger Deke Leonard and Mike Jones that led them to be compared to Quicksilver Messenger Service. But Clive John's Hammond organ gives Man's sound an extra texture that pushes them a bit in a prog direction Throughout making Revelation exactly that (headphones highly recommended)! Real Gone Music is proud to give this overlooked late-'60s gem its first-ever American reissue in a flipback album jacket (flaps outside on back cover) that mimics its original Pye label packaging. Purple vinyl pressing limited to 1000 copies!
