What's New 6-12-26

Duane Betts
Sun Records

Recorded in five days at Dave Cobb's Savannah studio, Isle of Hope is informed by the 2024 death of Duane's father, Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. Centerpiece 'Heartache' is an extraordinary piece of grief rendered as slide-guitar Southern rock. With Cobb's production and Betts' extraordinary playing, Isle of Hope earns its Sun Records home.

Kelsey Lu
Dirty Hit

One of 2026's most creatively singular albums. Co-produced with Jack Antonoff and Yves Rothman, So Help Me God blends electronics, cello, distorted guitars, and choral elements into something that resists genre labeling. Lead single 'Running to Pain' is a striking entry point. This music asks to be taken seriously on its own terms, and fully earns it.

Olivia Rodrigo
Interscope

Rodrigo's third album continues her evolution beyond the heartbreak-pop of Sour and teenage angst of Guts. The title signals new emotional complexity - more nuanced, more ambivalent. Produced again with Dan Nigro, the record maintains her gift for earworm melodicism while pushing into more sophisticated territory. She remains one of her generation's most natural pop songwriters.

Fruit Bats
Merge Records

Eric D. Johnson's twelfth Fruit Bats album - his most live-sounding in years - was tracked quickly with his full touring band following solo sessions that sparked a new direction. Psychedelic, technicolor, bursting with momentum. Johnson calls it 'the most live a Fruit Bats record has been since The Ruminant Band.' One of Merge's most consistently satisfying acts, fully in bloom.

Out 6.26: Butthole Surfers - After The Astronaut

Riding the least likely commercial success of the 90s with Modern Rock chart topper "Pepper," Austin odd rockers Butthole Surfers returned to the studio in 1998 for the followup, After The Astronaut. Leaning further into experiments with electronics, hip-hop, acid grooves, and the otherwise unusual, the result is a dizzying orbital trip expanding the idea of what's possible in rock music.Disputes between The Butthole Surfers and Capitol Records left the album unreleased, while the band regrouped and re-recorded some of the material for 2001's Weird Revolution, released through Hollywood Records. After The Astronaut collected dust, eventually developing a mythic status.A quarter century later, Butthole Surfers are realizing their vision for After The Astronaut. Newly mixed by guitarist/producer Paul Leary, After The Astronaut corrects the record on the band's activity in the late 90s with a bold, idiosyncratic evolution of their sun-fried psychedelia.

Out 6.26: Muse - The WOW! Signal

Muse are a culturally-attuned, genre-defying band who channel the anxieties of each era—technology, power, rebellion, and identity—into maximalist, stadium-ready rock that evolves with the times while staying unmistakably Muse. Kicking off with new single “Be With You,” this next era of Muse is rooted in electronic experimentation and an insatiable curiosity. ‘The WOW! Signal’ represents a world of cosmic mystery, existential hope, and the exhilarating possibility of contact with something far greater than ourselves.
