The Awakening has been described as a collection of powerful yet confessional songs that are personal as well as universal. Etheridge acknowledges that her experience with breast cancer allowed her to be so open on this album. The Awakening was co-produced with David Cole and recorded with her band: bassist Mark Browne, drummer Mauricio'Fritz'Lewak, and guitarist Philip Sayce.

Last we saw Melissa, she was accepting the Best Original Song Oscar for An Inconvenient Truth's closing title call-to-arms "I Need to Wake Up." Turns out the esteemed singer-songwriter was assembling The Awakening, her first album of new material in three years, during rehearsals. She claims the lyrics center on her experiences with chemotherapy and breast cancer, which should spawn some of her most personal material to date.
