Miss Scott was world renowned for her funky, grooving organ playing on numerous dates for Prestige and Impulse and countless collaborations with tenor giants such as John Coltrane, the Lockjaw/Johnny Griffin group, and Stanley Turrentine. The piano however, was Shirley's first instrument and recently she turned back to it with a sense of mature discovery. Miss Scott had in fact appeared regularly on America's Eastern seaboard with her Trio incorporating bassist Arthur Harper and the irrepressible Mickey Roker on drums. This set recorded live at Birdland in New York City proves that trios don't come hipper, more truthful or stimulating than this one!
